Kraken Glass Pendant
Kraken Glass Pendant
Pirate glass is the term for dark and sometimes black sea glass. The terms reference manmade but natural finished gems found on beaches. They started as discarded bottles and jugs. They were tossed and tumbled by the surf until they took on the look of gemstones. Lighter colors are more commonly called beach, sea, or ocean glass. These began as an accidental approximation.
I had a collection of Kraken Rum bottles of all shapes and sizes. I also had a concrete mixer with sand. I use the mixer to clean knives after I quench them in oil. When I moved, I put the bottles into the mixer to save space. I thought the sand would protect them. It did not. When situated in my new place, the mixer had sand and broken glass. I turned it on. A week later I had my first Kraken glass.
From there, I switched to colored glass. The woods behind my apartment seem to grow empty beer bottles. While I admit to contributing to the project directly, the majority of my Kraken glass is from discards left in the woods or alongside the road.
Each pendant will vary in size, shape, and shade.
