Chinese zodiac, or shengxiao (/shnng-sshyao/ 'born resembling'), consists of 12 zodiac animals. Unlike Western astrology, the Chinese zodiac symbols are assigned by year of birth. They begin and end at the Chinese New Year which falls in January or February with the rat and ends with the rat and ends 12 years later with the pig. In chronological order, the symbols follow the cycle of Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit/ Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat/ Ram Monkey, Rooster / Cock, Dog, and Pig.
